OXONBIKE, Oxford

OXONBIKE is a mixed fleet of 80 bikes, 22 of which are electric bikes at 14 docking stations across Oxford. The scheme connects major employment centres including the Hospitals and Universities in Headington with the city centre and Park & Ride sites, enabling business and commuter trips to be conveniently made by bike. A further 8 ebikes are being added at Oxford railway station.

The scheme expansion is funded by the Shared Electric Bike Programme, with match funding from the University of Oxford. It aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality through active travel.

Adam Bows, Sustainable Transport Manager at the University of Oxford said:

“The addition of e-bikes to the OXONBIKE fleet will take the pain out of cycling up Headington Hill and enable more University staff to travel quickly and sustainably between the Science Area, the OUH hospital sites in Oxford and Old Road Campus”.

Case study

Anar, University of Oxford Researcher:

“For me there are two main benefits, one is that the docking station is near my daughter’s nursery, so I could take her by foot (I am afraid to take her by bike) and then just go and rent the Oxonbikes, without any further delays.

“The second benefit is that I work in the science area of the university and therefore have to climb the Headington hill every day when I go back home. With the e-bikes it is a piece of cake and takes less than 15 mins”

Levan, a medical student, currently living in the Jericho area of Oxford, explains how the electric bikes have transformed his daily commute to and from John Radcliffe Hospital:

‘I use both the OXONBIKE pedal and electric bikes because I have total flexibility. The price is comparable to the bus, but this is much more flexible and faster. Plus it’s good for my health and the environment. I have used many bike schemes in Europe but this one has by far been my best experience.’
