Carplus advocates minimising car use but there are some times when a car journey is the only option. In this case it is still possible to reduce the negative impacts of the trip – such as fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and accident rates – by simply adjusting the way the car is driven.
By driving more efficiently emissions and fuel consumption can be reduced significantly. Slight changes to driving habits could save up to 8% emissions.
Before you drive:
- Pump up your tyres
- Clear any extra weight
- Service your car regularly
- Plan your route
As you drive:
- Drive at an appropriate speed
- Speed up and slow down smoothly
- Change gears at lower revs
- Avoid leaving your engine running
- Avoid using air conditioning
