Responsible car use is about reducing the negative impacts of cars on society and the environment whilst maintaining the benefits of flexibility. Those impacts are many and diverse and occur throughout the life cycle of a car, from its manufacture, throughout its working life, to its eventual disposal.
Car clubs and car sharing schemes in conjunction with other sustainable travel modes can limit the dependency on car ownership, use and side-effects. However, as we live in a car dependent society, giving up a car is not always easy or desirable. In this instance it is useful to know how negative aspects can be minimised.
The following section will highlight examples of how to reduce the negative impacts of cars, including integration with sustainable travel modes, eco-driving, low carbon options and car disposal.
