FREE workshops: Delivering Cost & Carbon Savings for Business Travel

Southampton, Civic Centre: 2-4pm, Tuesday 7th February
Oxford, Town Hall: 2.30-4.30pm, Wednesday 8th February

Carplus is working with a consortium of five Transport Authorities in the South of England to develop a programme to expand the network of low emission car clubs in the sub-region. Programme funding is being sought from the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF).

A core element of the proposed programme, Developing Car Clubs in Southern England, involves working with employers to deliver cost and carbon savings on business travel. Carplus is therefore hosting two free workshops in order to demonstrate the relevance of the programme to large private and public sector and NHS employers, SMEs, and Local Enterprise Partnerships in the target areas. The Car Club Forum 16

NCVO, Regent’s Wharf, 8 All Saints Street, London, N1 9RL.
Thursday 23rd February, 2012, 2pm – 5pm.

The Car Club Forum 16 will focus on at least three key issues. First, we will look at the work undertaken by Carplus on documenting the benefits of Car Clubs in reducing emissions and improving air quality. Second, we will focus on car club parking permit charges, highlighted recently by a survey of London Boroughs undertaken by Carplus and the concerns expressed by operators about escalating charges. We will attempt to develop a framework for setting a fair permit charge. We also expect to receive an update from TfL on plans for 2012/13.

This event is free to London Boroughs and Carplus members. Read more.

UITP positions itself in favour of Car Clubs and hosts Combined Mobility Workshop

3rd Combined Mobility Platform Workshop

Transport for London, 197 Blackfriars Road, London, SE1 8NJ
9am – 5pm, Monday 27th February, 2012

In November 2011, UITP published a Position Paper on Combined Mobility, Becoming a real mobility provider, which looked at the synergy of public transport with other modes. It placed an emphasis on the role of Car sharing (car clubs) detailing the potential synergies in areas such as "the integrated urban planning of public transport networks and cycling infrastructure ... and communication", and the potential benefits for air quality, quality of life in cities, and public health.

Now, UITP is hosting a workshop to discuss solutions for modern and flexible urban mobility. It intends to convince public transport decision-makers of the benefits of combined mobility services, show the economic and ecological advantages of partnerships, and highlight areas where coordination is mutually beneficial, with the common and undeniable target to change citizens’ travel behaviour and offer a genuine alternative to the car.

Participation in this event is free, however seats are limited and so priority booking be awarded to UITP members, Carplus members, and non-members, respectively. Read more.

20 MSPs support Motion on Car Clubs

S4M-01385
"That the Parliament congratulates Spare Wheels, a community-run car club providing access to pay-as-you-go cars in the town of Dunbar; notes the success of the club, which, in its first year of operation, has attracted 30 members and which will soon have three cars; further notes research carried out by the sustainable transport charity, Carplus, which suggests that car clubs in Scotland not only improve accessibility by providing access to a car without the expense of owning and maintaining one, but also save an estimated 148 tonnes of CO2 a year by providing individuals and communities with access to more fuel efficient vehicles, encourage individuals to drive fewer miles and reduce the overall number of cars on roads, and welcomes the work of Developing Car Clubs in Scotland, a Carplus initiative that aims to encourage and support similar clubs in communities across Scotland."
