Buckinghamshire is one of the pioneering
Local Authorities when it comes to the Safer Routes to School initiative. The
Road Safety team have developed a comprehensive package of measures to tackle
the congestion associated with the school run, one of which is car sharing.
Their website points out that although ideally pupils would walk, cycle or bus
to school, if longer distances are involved this is sometimes not practical.
Car sharing can fill this gap. The website encourages parents to either
contact their child's school to let them know they are looking to share, or to
register with the Bucks Car share to search for a match online.
Other elements which complement the car share scheme include a Park &
Walk, where parents are encouraged to park a short distance from school in a
designated area (e.g. a pub or shopping centre car park) and to walk the rest
of the way with their children. An alternative version of this scheme sees the
Park & Walk station acting as a stop for a walking bus, known in Bucks as
a Crocodile. Children can then be safely escorted the rest of the way to
school on foot.
