In partnership with Transport for London
Over recent years, Carplus has established a strong partnership with Transport for London, primarily through the implementation of the Car Clubs Strategy (March 2008).
Car clubs are a significant policy instrument for the reduction of carbon emissions from transport and improvement of air quality in London. Through its borough partnerships, Transport for London is investing around £500,000 per annum in car club parking infrastructure and in the initial years funded promotional activities targeting the public and employers.
Carplus has supported this programme over several years by developing good practice guidance, supporting relevant officers in the boroughs by providing information and facilitating networking, and supporting innovation. It has also assisted the car club operators in developing effective partnerships with boroughs, and monitored growth in the sector through data collection.
As a result of this partnership, London has one of the largest and most dense networks of car clubs in the world, with over 2,500 pay-as-you go vehicles in the capital. As boroughs such as Islington and Wandsworth aim for 1000 cars in their areas, the current market assessments made by TfL demonstrate a potential for a million members and 20,000 cars by 2020.
