As more people join car clubs across the UK, they are finding that the club offers them choice, convenience, and cost savings. On this page we have profiled a cross section of members, highlighting the benefits which are important to them.
Edinburgh City Car Club is the flagship car club in the UK. The decision to set up the club reflected both local and national transport policy: the aim was to tackle congestion, pollution and parking pressures in the city, while recognising the importance of the car.
Bristol City Car Club provides a good example of a working partnership between a number of different sectors. Launched as the BEST car club in July 2000 with seven members sharing two cars, it is steadily expanding into new neighbourhoods, with people across the city lining up to join the club as soon as parking bays can be designated in their area.
Initiated with European funding from the Target programme and now operated by WhizzGo in partnership with Leeds City Council and METRO West Yorkshire PTE, the Leeds club was launched in July 2004 and is growing fast.
Zedcars is the car club at BedZED - Beddington Zero Energy Development - in the London Borough of Sutton. This is the first new development in Britain to have a car club as an integral part of its design, and it helped underpin a case to reduce the usual parking provision by around 50%.
The City-Wheels car club in Swansea is the first in the UK to specifically serve social housing residents. It was set up by Swansea Housing Association in February 2001 to meet the needs of their City Living tenants - a project to encourage people to move back into the city centre. City Wheels cars are also used by Housing Association staff for both business and personal use.
The Rusty Car Pool in Leicester is an excellent example of a club which runs older cars at a minimum cost. The club relies on trust and a strong sense of community, with members willing to contribute on a voluntary basis to the organisational aspects and day-to-day running of the club.
